Nanael holds the 53rd position in the Shem HaMephorash, the sacred Name that Christian Kabbalah — following the works of Ambelain and Haziel — extracts from three verses of Exodus 14:19-21, each containing 72 Hebrew letters read in boustrophedon to form 72 angelic triplets. He presides over 20°–25° of Sagittarius within the choir of Principalities, of which Haniel — archangel of grace, gentleness, and spiritual transmission — is the prince. This choir watches over human groups, wisdom traditions, and institutions dedicated to transmission. His name, meaning 'God who humbles the proud', places Nanael squarely in the lineage of angels who guard the boundaries of the ego: those who remind seekers that spiritual greatness leaves no room for vanity.

In the Kabbalistic tradition, Nanael is the angel who inspires those in religious life, philosophers, teachers, and all who have chosen to devote their lives to the search for the divine or to the transmission of knowledge. He is invoked to foster deep meditation, access to contemplative states, and the reception of intuitions that come from above. He is also credited with protecting against intellectual pride — a virtue consistent with his name which evokes the humbling of arrogance — reminding that true knowledge begins where pretension ends. He is invoked by those traversing dark nights of the soul, helping them maintain their course toward the light without succumbing to despair.

To meditate with Nanael is to revisit the relationship one holds with knowledge and transmission. He poses the question: do I learn in order to possess, or in order to serve? Do I transmit in order to be recognized, or to offer something that exceeds me? His Sagittarian presence opens toward the great spaces of the mind, where conceptual systems yield before the direct experience of the sacred.
