Manakel

Manakel occupies the sixty-sixth position of the Shem HaMephorash and closes the Aquarius section of the final angelic choir, governed by the archangel Gabriel. He reigns over 25° to 30° of Aquarius, from February 14 to 18, at the approach of the shift toward Pisces — the threshold between the world of rational air and the waters of intuition. This boundary position gives him a liminal nature: he holds the edge of the known before the great Piscean dissolution begins.

The Christian Kabbalistic tradition attributes to him the virtue of sustenance: Manakel is the one who supports beings in imbalance, who prevents the fall when everything seems to waver. He grants ethical knowledge — not through dogma but through inner discernment — helping to perceive clearly what elevates and what diminishes. He is also invoked for sleep-related troubles: nightmares, insomnia, nocturnal anxiety. As guardian of the threshold between wakefulness and sleep, he is said to clarify meaningful dreams and protect consciousness during the journeys of night. Haziel and Ambelain also ascribe to him a soothing influence over disordered passions and compulsive behaviors born of fear.

Meditatively, Manakel represents the quiet force that keeps the being upright without apparent effort — like the invisible spine of the cosmos. Invoking his name before sleep is to entrust one's consciousness to a benevolent presence that watches over the depths. He invites us not to fear inner darkness, but to patiently discern within it the forms that truth takes when it can only express itself in images and nocturnal symbols. What he sustains is not the illusion of control — it is the fundamental dignity of the being in motion.
