The Hierophant — Spiritual Teaching
# Arcana 5: The Guardian of Tradition
The Hierophant (the Pope) sits on his throne, holding a three-tiered scepter. Two acolytes kneel before him, receiving his blessing and teaching. He wears three layers of garments — representing the three worlds: physical, psychic, and spiritual.
The Hierophant is spiritual authority, wisdom teacher, and guardian of tradition. He is the priest, the rabbi, the imam — any figure who transmits the established wisdom of past generations. When The Hierophant appears, he speaks of tradition, formal teaching, spiritual initiation, and adherence to an established belief system.
Unlike The Magician who creates his own reality, The Hierophant submits to a higher authority and transmits that wisdom to others. He is the respected mentor, the spiritual guide who has walked the path and can now illuminate the way for others.
In relationships, The Hierophant speaks of formal commitment, perhaps marriage or sacred vows. In business, he speaks of respecting established structure and following proven protocols.
Reversed, The Hierophant may indicate a rejection of tradition, rebellion against authority, or a spiritual rigidity that stifles personal growth. He becomes the person who refuses to learn from those who came before.
The Hierophant teaches you that collective wisdom is precious — but it must never crush your own unique personal path.
