Moldavite is a tektite — not a true mineral but a glass formed when a meteorite struck the earth in what is now southern Germany approximately 14.8 million years ago, sending molten earth-rock into the atmosphere where it cooled into aerodynamic forms before raining back down into Bohemia and Moravia. Found only in the Czech Republic, it is among the rarest substances on Earth.
