Deeper Meaning
Hexagram 2, Kūn, is composed of six broken yin lines — the trigram Earth (☷) doubled. Where Qián concentrates yang force, Kūn opens into boundless receptive capacity. The classical image in Wilhelm reads: 'The earth's condition is receptive devotion; thus the superior man who has breadth of character carries the outer world.' This is not passivity; the mare (rather than the stallion) of the judgment is significant — the mare moves, she follows the subtle direction of the terrain, she nourishes. Legge and Wilhelm both emphasize that Kūn is not the subordinate of Qián in a diminishing sense, but its equal and complement — without the earth to receive and form, celestial energy has nowhere to land and nothing to become. The two middle lines of the hexagram point toward the deep abundance that emerges when the yin function is fulfilled without imitation of yang.
In relationships, Kūn invites one to explore the difference between following out of strength and following out of fear. True receptivity is a conscious, generous act — holding space for what another brings without absorbing it into one's own shape. In professional or creative contexts, this hexagram suggests that now is a time to listen, to gather, to let the work mature in silence rather than pushing it prematurely into form. The sage here does not dominate a meeting — the sage pays attention more carefully than anyone else and speaks at the right moment.
The inner counsel of Kūn is the practice of non-resistance without dissolution. One does not lose oneself in yielding — one discovers the immense strength of earth, which yields to rain and roots without ceasing to be earth. The movement this hexagram initiates tends toward Zhūn (hexagram 3), where form begins to emerge from the formless. The spiritual task is learning to carry without grasping, to nourish without possessing, to support without needing recognition for the support given.
