Hexagram 5, Xū, sets Heaven (☰) below and Water (☵) above — clouds gathered over the strength of creative force, obscuring the sky but charged with potential. The judgment announces sincerity and sublime success, and the classical image invites the superior man to eat, drink, and be cheerful: this is not passive resignation but active, confident waiting, fully present to the moment while trusting the unfolding. Wilhelm's commentary draws on the image of a man who must cross a river — he waits on the bank not out of cowardice but out of intelligence, watching the current, preparing himself, knowing that the moment to act will arrive. The danger (Water) hovers above, real but not yet descended; one's own strength (Heaven) remains intact below.

In the context of human experience, Xū is the hexagram of nourishing patience. In relationships, it suggests that pressing for resolution or declaration before the moment is ripe will damage what is trying to form naturally.
