Melahel is the twenty-third name of the Shem HaMephorash, the corpus of seventy-two divine names drawn from verses 19, 20, and 21 of Exodus 14 by the trigrammatic method. These three Hebrew verses, each composed of exactly seventy-two letters, are read by alternating the direct and reverse directions to form seventy-two trigrams each designating a celestial intelligence. Melahel belongs to the choir of Thrones, placed under archangel Tsaphkiel, and embodies the therapeutic force of this order which sustains cosmic laws — including the biological laws of healing that run through all living beings. He governs 20° to 25° of Cancer, a lunar sign linked to the nurturer, the plant kingdom, and the purifying waters of ancient springs.

Tradition attributes to him an exceptional power over medicinal plants and natural remedies. Ambelain notes that those born under his degrees are often drawn toward botany, phytotherapy, herbal medicine, or traditional healing practices. Melahel is invoked to heal chronic or difficult illnesses, to protect during crossings of potentially dangerous waters, and more broadly to drive away any influence that harms physical or psychic integrity. His very name — 'God who banishes evil' — designates an active force of eviction of harmful influences, whether pathogenic, environmental, or subtle. He is also the angel of those who heal and accompany the healing of others.
