Perthro — of uncertain but likely Proto-Germanic etymology, often interpreted as 'cup' (for casting lots), 'fruit tree,' or 'chess pawn' — is the fourteenth rune of the Elder Futhark and remains one of its most debated. The Anglo-Saxon rune poem is cryptic: 'Perthro is always play and laughter among bold men, where warriors sit together in the beer-hall, merry.' Yet the scholarly tradition consistently associates it with the cup used to shake and cast runes, the vessel of divination, the enclosure of hidden fate. The Norns preside — all three: Urd weaving the past, Verdandi binding the present, Skuld cutting toward the future. This is the rune of what is already woven and not yet revealed.

In a cast, Perthro holds the mystery. Upright, it marks a moment when hidden information is beginning to surface — something concealed is on the verge of becoming visible, whether from the unconscious, from another person, or from circumstance. Meditating with Perthro means learning to sit comfortably in not-knowing. Visualize the stave — often described as a cup tipped sideways, a womb shape opened to the left — and let it be empty. Do not try to fill it. The galdr *'Perthro, perthro, perthro'* is whispered as a question without a required answer. In the second aett, Perthro follows Eihwaz (the world-axis that makes all worlds accessible) and precedes Algiz (sacred protection): you descend into mystery on a secure axis, and what you find there is held in divine protection.
