Sowilo Rune — Sun · Victory

Deeper Meaning

Sowilo — from Proto-Germanic *sōwilō, 'sun' — is the sixteenth and final rune of the second aett, and its closing in radiant victory mirrors how Wunjo closed the first aett in earthly joy. The Anglo-Saxon rune poem calls it 'to seamen the sun is always hope, when they journey over the fish's bath, until the sea-steed brings them to harbor.' The Icelandic poem: 'Sun is the shield of the clouds, and shining glory, and the destroyer of ice.' The Norwegian: 'Sun is the light of the lands; I bow to divine decree.' Sól, the sun goddess of Norse tradition, drives her chariot across the sky — forever pursued by the wolf Skoll — and Sowilo is the unstoppable quality of her light.

In a cast, Sowilo arrives as a tide that cannot be reversed. Upright — and like other symmetrical or powerful runes it has no reverse position in most traditions — it marks a moment of breakthrough illumination: the seeker's genuine nature shining through circumstance, success that has been earned by sustained effort, the revelation of inner resources previously hidden. In love, Sowilo can indicate a relationship in its most luminous phase. In work, it marks achievement — not boastful but sun-sure. The shadow teaching of Sowilo is excess: untempered solar energy blinds. The invitation is to let the light serve and illuminate, not to be consumed by it.

Meditation with Sowilo works with the lightning-bolt form of its stave — a diagonal S-shape in motion, always moving, never static. Visualize light as dynamic rather than still, and intone the galdr *'Sowilo, sowilo, sowilo'* with full voice, feeling the sound expand outward in all directions. In the second aett, Sowilo completes the teaching arc: Hagalaz brought disruption, Nauthiz necessity, Isa stillness, Jera harvest, Eihwaz depth, Perthro mystery, Algiz protection — and now Sowilo floods all of it with consciousness. The second aett ends in triumph. The third begins.
