Deeper Meaning

Algiz — from Proto-Germanic *algiz or *elhaz, 'elk' or 'protection' — is the fifteenth rune of the Elder Futhark, governed by the Valkyries. Its form — a vertical line with two branches reaching upward like antlers, or like hands raised in supplication — appears across runic tradition as one of the most consistent protective marks. The Anglo-Saxon rune poem speaks of the sedge plant: 'It grows in the marshland and waxes in the water, inflicting a severe wound and staining with blood every man who attempts to grasp it' — here protection through natural boundary, the defensive thorn of the threshold plant. The Valkyries are its presiding forces: choosers of the slain, escorts of the worthy dead, guardians of the sacred warrior.

In a cast, Algiz stands at the door. Upright, it marks a moment of genuine protection — an invisible shield around the seeker, the sense of being held by something larger. In love, it may indicate a relationship that serves as a genuine sanctuary; it can also suggest that the seeker is being called to protect another. On the inner path, Algiz speaks of connection to ancestral guides and the importance of spiritual discernment — not all energies encountered in liminal states are benevolent. Reversed or inverted, Algiz signals spiritual vulnerability: protection temporarily weakened, the need to be more discerning about what is allowed across one's thresholds.

To meditate with Algiz, stand with arms raised at a slight angle above the horizontal — the rune as your own body. Feel the upward reach not as pleading but as open reception, grounded through the feet. The galdr *'Algiz, algiz, algiz'* is spoken with authority, as an invocation of divine guardianship. In the second aett, Algiz follows Perthro (the mystery revealed) and precedes Sowilo (solar victory): having descended into the unknown, the seeker requires protection before ascending into full light. Algiz is the guardian of the crossing.
