Deeper Meaning

Mannaz — from Proto-Germanic *mannaz, 'human being' — is the twentieth rune of the Elder Futhark and the fourth of the third aett. It is the rune of self-reflection in its deepest sense: not the individual ego, but the human being as a conscious, relational, and mortal being aware of their own nature. Heimdall, the watchman of the gods who stands at the boundary between Asgard and the world of humanity, presides here — he is said to have fathered the three classes of humankind (thrall, farmer, and chieftain), giving Mannaz its socially embedded, fully realized quality. The Anglo-Saxon rune poem: 'The joyous man is dear to his kinsmen; yet every man is doomed to fail his fellow, since the Lord by his decree will commit the vile carrion to the earth.' Mortality is part of the fullness.

In a cast, Mannaz calls for genuine self-examination. Upright, it marks the moment to step back from the drama of circumstance and ask: who is the one experiencing this? It invites clarity about motives, honest self-assessment without self-punishment. It may also signal that human support — the wisdom of other people, consultation with trusted advisors — is the right resource for the current situation. In love, Mannaz speaks of the importance of each partner having a genuine, individuated self; codependence is its shadow. Reversed or challenged, it warns of ego-inflation or dissolution — either too much selfhood (narcissism) or too little (loss of identity in another).

Meditating with Mannaz means sitting with the question 'What is a human being?' without rushing to an answer. Visualize the stave — two Wunjo-shapes back to back, creating a doubled reflection — as consciousness regarding itself. The galdr *'Mannaz, mannaz, mannaz'* is spoken as clear, self-directed speech. In the third aett, Mannaz follows Ehwaz (right partnership) and precedes Laguz (the unconscious depths): the fully individuated self now descends into the inner waters to know what lies beneath rational consciousness.
