Deeper Meaning
Laguz — from Proto-Germanic *laguz, 'water' or 'sea' — is the twenty-first rune of the Elder Futhark and the fifth of the third aett. Water in the Norse world was both the medium of life and the boundary of the known: the ocean surrounding Midgard, the rivers threading through Yggdrasil, the wells at the roots of the world-tree — Urdarbrunnr (Urd's Well of fate), Mímisbrunnr (Mímir's Well of wisdom), Hvergelmir (the source of all rivers). Njord, the Vanir sea-god, presides over Laguz — he who governs the tides, the winds at sea, the harvest of the ocean, and the deep intuitive knowing that comes from long immersion in flux. The Anglo-Saxon rune poem: 'The sea seems interminable to men, if they venture on the rolling bark and the waves of the sea terrify them greatly, and the sea-steed does not heed the bridle.'
In a cast, Laguz speaks in the register of feeling and intuition. Upright, it marks a moment when the unconscious is active and informative — dreams, hunches, and emotional responses are carrying more signal than rational analysis. Trust the inner tide. In love, Laguz can indicate a relationship with depth of feeling that surpasses what can be said; it can also signal the need to honor the emotional reality of the situation without intellectualizing it away. On the inner path it invites descent into the waters of the psyche — the shadow material, the ancestral patterns, the felt sense of what is true. Reversed or challenged, Laguz warns of emotional confusion, betrayed intuition, or the seeker being overwhelmed by unconscious material.
Meditation with Laguz works with water itself when possible. Sit by a river or hold water in a bowl. Visualize the stave — a vertical line with a diagonal descending to the right, like a wave or a current bending — as water finding its way. The galdr *'Laguz, laguz, laguz'* is intoned in a flowing, unbroken stream of sound. In the third aett, Laguz follows Mannaz (conscious self) and precedes Ingwaz (the seed): the self, known, descends into the waters of the unknown and emerges carrying the seed of what will be born next.
