Deeper Meaning

Berkano — from Proto-Germanic *berkanan, 'birch tree' — is the eighteenth rune of the Elder Futhark and the second of the third aett. The birch is the pioneer tree: after fire or ice, it is the first to return, its white bark a signal of renewal against charred or frozen ground. The Anglo-Saxon rune poem describes it as 'without fruit, yet it bears shoots without seeds; its boughs are beautiful, its branches tall.' A tree that regenerates without fruit in the conventional sense — it perpetuates itself through runners and coppicing, through the nurturing of new stems from old roots. Frigg, the mother-goddess, queen of Asgard, presides here: keeper of all secrets, the divine feminine principle of gestation and protection.

In a cast, Berkano speaks of the generative feminine in all its forms — not only motherhood in the biological sense but creative incubation, nurturing care, and the capacity to shelter growth through vulnerability. In love, Berkano can signal the deepening of domestic and intimate bonds. On the inner path it invites attending to what is fragile and newly emergent within. Reversed or challenged, Berkano points to stagnation in the feminine principle: creative birth blocked, nurturing that has become smothering, or grief that has not been permitted to transform.

Visualize the stave — a vertical line with two rounded bumps on the right, like breasts or budding branches — and breathe slowly into the belly. The galdr *'Berkano, berkano, berkano'* is spoken softly, as a lullaby or as the sound of leaves moving. In the third aett, Berkano receives the moral clarity of Tiwaz and transforms it into new life: from sacrifice comes renewal. It precedes Ehwaz, the sacred partnership — mother-energy makes space for the bonds that follow.
