Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven & IC: The Four Angles of Your Birth Chart
Among all the points in a natal chart, four stand apart as the most structurally significant: the Ascendant (ASC), the Descendant (DESC), the Midheaven (MC), and the Imum Coeli (IC). These four angles form the cardinal cross of your chart — the skeletal framework upon which the entire astrological structure rests. Planets placed near any of these four points carry exceptional weight and often describe the most defining themes of an individual's life.
The **Ascendant** (ASC) — also called the Rising Sign — is the degree of the zodiac that was crossing the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. It marks the cusp of the First House and represents your social mask, your instinctive self-presentation, and the first impression you make on others. While the Sun sign describes who you are at your core, the Ascendant describes how you are perceived — the costume you wear in the opening act of every new encounter. A Leo Ascendant radiates warmth and presence. A Capricorn Ascendant projects composure and authority. Over time, the qualities of the Ascendant are gradually integrated into the authentic self.
The **Descendant** (DESC) sits directly opposite the Ascendant, marking the cusp of the Seventh House. It describes the qualities you seek and attract in significant partnerships — romantic, professional, and otherwise. What you project outward through the Ascendant, you tend to meet as a mirror in the Descendant: the complementary energy that both challenges and completes you.
The **Midheaven** (MC — *Medium Coeli*) marks the highest point of the chart and the cusp of the Tenth House. It represents your public reputation, your professional calling, your highest ambitions, and the legacy you are building in the outer world. The sign and planets associated with the MC often describe the career path where you feel most called — and most visible.
The **IC** (*Imum Coeli*) sits at the chart's lowest point, opposite the MC, and marks the cusp of the Fourth House. It represents your private foundation — your ancestry, your psychological roots, your sense of home, and the family inheritance (emotional as much as material) from which you grow. What is built above at the MC must be rooted below in the IC.
