Hexagram 16, Yù, places Earth (☷) below and Thunder (☳) above — the great, stable, receptive earth beneath the sudden, galvanizing shock of thunder. The classical image evokes the moment when music begins: the first rolling thunder of a drum that causes the whole assembly to stir, to feel in their bodies the collective pulse. Wilhelm renders it: 'Thunder comes resounding out of the earth — enthusiasm. The ancient kings made music in order to honor merit, and offered it with splendor to the Supreme Deity, inviting their ancestors to be present.' This hexagram is about the power of resonance: not the enthusiasm of private excitement, but the contagious energy that moves through a group and aligns it toward shared motion.

In human affairs, Yù speaks to leadership through inspiration rather than command.
