Approach of the favorable. Take advantage, but know it will not last.

Deeper Meaning

Hexagram 19, Lín, places Lake (☱) below and Earth (☷) above — the open, reflective, joyful energy of the lake beneath the vast, nurturing earth. The image is of approaching, of something favorable drawing near: light approaching, warmth returning, opportunity entering the field. The name itself — Lín — means 'to overlook,' 'to approach from above,' carrying the sense of the ruler who descends to inspect and attend to the people, and of favorable forces descending to tend what has been prepared. Wilhelm's image: 'The earth stands above the lake — approach. The superior man is inexhaustible in his will to teach, and without limits in his tolerance and protection of the people.'

Yet the judgment carries a genuine shadow: 'In the eighth month, misfortune.' The classical interpretation holds that the favorable configuration will not last — it is a gift of a particular season, and the one who understands the nature of cycles will use the window actively rather than assuming it will extend indefinitely. In relationships, Lín signals a time of genuine openness and approach: what seemed distant is now accessible, and the invitation to deepen is real. The counsel is to respond to this openness with matching generosity rather than with the guarded caution of more difficult times.

In meditation, the teaching of Lín is about the right use of favorable moments. The earth does not hoard the water of the lake — it receives it, holds it, and allows it to nourish everything rooted within it. The approach of favorable conditions is not something to exploit but something to meet with equal generosity and readiness. What favorable current is currently moving in your direction? How are you orienting yourself to receive it fully and use it well? The movement toward Guān (hexagram 20) invites contemplation: after acting well within the favorable window, one steps back to observe, to see clearly what has grown.
