Deeper Meaning

Hexagram 17, Suí, places Thunder (☳) below and Lake (☱) above — thunder moving beneath the serene, reflective surface of the lake, as if sound were traveling through still water. The classical tradition identifies this hexagram with the late autumn: the thunder enters the earth to rest, and wise creatures follow, withdrawing into winter quarters. Suí is therefore the hexagram of following the right movement at the right time — adaptable alignment with what is genuinely unfolding, as distinct from servile compliance or the renunciation of judgment. Wilhelm: 'In the middle of the lake is thunder — following. The superior man at nightfall goes indoors for rest and recuperation.'

In human experience, Suí speaks to all situations requiring the discernment to know what is worth following. In relationships, it invites reflection on whether one is adapting to a partner out of genuine love and wisdom, or out of the inability to hold one's own ground. True following in the I Ching sense is active, conscious, and provisional: one follows because the direction is right, not because one is afraid of the alternative. In professional life, this hexagram may appear when the wisest move is to align with an existing momentum — a colleague's vision, a market trend, a creative direction — rather than insisting on one's own original course.

The meditation within Suí is the practice of discerning between authentic alignment and unconscious compliance. The thunder does not cease to be thunder when it rests in the earth for winter — it gathers itself, accumulates depth, and emerges with renewed force in spring. What in your life is worth following with your whole being? What would you follow if following cost you something? And what are you following merely out of habit or inertia? The movement toward Gǔ (hexagram 18) carries the question of what has been neglected or allowed to decay during the comfortable seasons of following.
