Hexagram 7, Shī, combines Water (☵) below and Earth (☷) above — danger contained within the great expanse of the nurturing earth. The image invokes the army: water hidden within the earth, mobilized when needed but ordinarily invisible and unglamorous. The classical commentary emphasizes that an army is only justified when serving a righteous cause, led by a strong and experienced man who has earned genuine trust, with the support and sanction of the ruler. Wilhelm's image — 'In the middle of the earth is water. The superior man nourishes the people and creates his following' — points toward the social dimension: the army is not an instrument of conquest but of protection, a disciplined force that makes civilization possible.

In practical terms, Shī speaks to any situation requiring coordinated collective effort under clear leadership.
