The judgment is characteristically nuanced: sincerity meets obstruction; good fortune comes through stopping halfway; seeing the great man brings benefit; completing the conflict does not. Wilhelm renders the classical image as: 'Heaven and water go their opposite ways — conflict. The superior man, in all transactions, carefully considers the beginning.' This hexagram is a serious warning against allowing disputes to escalate: the moment one recognizes that a conflict has begun, the wisest energy is directed toward honorable withdrawal, not victory.
