Hexagram 64 — Before Completion (Wèi Jì) — positions Fire above Water, the upward-leaping clarity of Li above the downward-flowing depth of Kan. This is the final hexagram of the I Ching, and its arrangement is the inverse of the preceding one: no line is in its correct position, yang in yin places and yin in yang places — everything is transitional, nothing yet settled. The classical image is precise and honest: the young fox, nearly across the frozen river, wets its tail. The goal is visible, the shore is close, but the final step has not yet been taken, and it is precisely in this proximity to completion that the greatest carelessness — and therefore the greatest danger — lies. Wilhelm's reading holds Before Completion as the hexagram of the threshold: not chaos but the ordered, promising, genuinely charged moment just before the new order is fully established.
