Ruta graveolens
The herb of grace. Rue is the most powerful anti-evil-eye plant in Mediterranean tradition.
Rue (Ruta graveolens), ruled by Saturn and the Fire element, is the supreme anti-evil-eye herb of the Mediterranean world — no other plant carries this specific protective office with such cross-cultural consensus. From southern Italy's 'cimaruta' amulets to Greek folk magic, from Sephardic Jewish protective practice to North African warding traditions, rue appears as the single most trusted shield against the malocchio (evil eye) and malevolent intent directed through envy or ill will. Leonardo da Vinci is said to have credited rue with improving his eyesight; in medieval Europe it was called the 'herb of grace,' carried by judges and priests to protect against disease and spiritual corruption. Its intensely bitter, acrid quality — both in smell and taste — embodies its magical function: it repels what is hostile and unwholesome with absolute authority. In ritual curse-breaking, rue water (water infused with the herb) is sprinkled over persons, objects, or spaces believed to be under magical attack, with immediate purifying effect. Its Saturnian rulership gives it dominion over boundaries, law, and the removal of what does not belong — making it an herb of exorcism as much as protection. Rue protection ritual practice is unambiguous in the Western magical tradition: where rue is present, the evil eye cannot settle.
