Mandrake (Mandragora officinarum), governed by Saturn and rooted in the Earth element, is the most mythologized plant in the entire Western grimoire tradition. Its bifurcated, vaguely humanoid root sparked centuries of legend: medieval herbalists taught that it screamed when pulled from the earth, killing anyone who heard it directly, and prescribed elaborate harvesting rituals involving dogs to pull the root while the practitioner covered their ears. This anthropomorphic form made it the pre-eminent magical amplifier: a living talisman believed to magnify any ritual tenfold. In European folk magic, mandrake root was hollowed, dressed, clothed, and fed wine and honey as a 'familiar' that attracted wealth, protected the household, and enhanced fertility.
