Its bifurcated, vaguely humanoid root sparked centuries of legend: medieval herbalists taught that it screamed when pulled from the earth, killing anyone who heard it directly, and prescribed elaborate harvesting rituals involving dogs to pull the root while the practitioner covered their ears.
