Keeping a Synchronicity Journal: The Method for Recognizing Them Without Fooling Yourself
In short
How to keep an effective synchronicity journal: what to write down, which confirmation-bias traps to avoid, and how to tell a truly meaningful coincidence from magical thinking. A step-by-step method.
1.Why a journal, and not just "paying attention"
Human memory is a very poor tool for assessing how often an event really occurs: it holds on tightly to striking coincidences and silently forgets the hundreds of moments when nothing notable happened. This is the exact breeding ground for confirmation bias. A written, dated journal, with at least a bit of context, is the only way to turn a vague impression ("weird things happen to me all the time") into an observation you can actually examine — and sometimes put into perspective, which is also a form of honest spiritual rigor.
2.What to write down, concretely, for each entry
For each perceived synchronicity, note: the precise date and time, the external event observed (a number, an encounter, a word heard twice), your inner state at the moment it happened (the question you were asking yourself, the emotion you were experiencing, a decision hanging in the balance), and the meaning you gave it in the moment — without reworking it afterward. That last detail matters: we often tend, weeks later, to reinterpret a neutral event so it fits a story we prefer. Writing the interpretation down in the moment limits that drift.
3.The blank-month test: the most honest check
Once a quarter, do the reverse exercise: for one week, also write down every number, word, or minor coincidence that carries NO particular meaning for you (a receipt timestamped 2:14 while you weren't thinking about anything, a repeated bus number). You will almost always find that these "non-events" are in fact just as frequent as the striking synchronicities — the difference isn't in the frequency of chance, it's in the attention you choose to give it. This finding does not cancel the value of the journal: it makes it more honest. A synchronicity is worth noting for what it makes you feel and for the reflection it triggers, not as statistical proof of a hidden order in the universe.
4.Rereading your journal: what you actually find after several months
The main value of a synchronicity journal kept over time usually isn't proving a paranormal phenomenon — it's revealing, when you reread it, which questions and concerns keep coming back most often in your inner life. The synchronicities you noted act as indirect markers of what truly matters to you right now. Jung himself defined synchronicity as a meaningful coincidence between an inner psychic state and an outer event — the meaning is born from the encounter, not from the event alone. Read this way, the journal becomes a solid tool for self-knowledge, independent of any belief in a metaphysical cause.

How do you properly keep a synchronicity journal?+
Each time, write down the date/time, the external event observed, your inner state at the moment (question, emotion, pending decision), and the interpretation you give it in the moment — without reworking it afterward, to avoid confirmation bias.
What is confirmation bias applied to synchronicities?+
It's the tendency to better remember coincidences that confirm what you already expect and to silently forget all the ones that carry no particular meaning — which distorts the impression that synchronicities are more frequent or more meaningful than they statistically are.
Is a synchronicity scientific proof of something?+
No. The concept of synchronicity, formulated by Carl Gustav Jung, describes a subjectively meaningful coincidence between a psychic state and an external event — a tool for self-reading, not a phenomenon measured or validated by the scientific method.
Why do the blank-month test in your journal?+
Because also noting neutral, meaningless coincidences lets you objectively compare their frequency to that of striking synchronicities — an exercise that makes the practice more honest without stripping it of its value for introspection.
