The Microcosmic Orbit: The Taoist Circulation That Transmutes Desire into Light
In short
The secret practice of the Yellow Mountain monks. A loop of energy in 12 minutes a day that reverses the flow of desire and fertilizes your crown.
1.The secret practice of the Yellow Mountain monks
On the slopes of Huang Shan in China, monks have been transmitting for twenty-five centuries a practice that appears simple — a loop of energy that circulates through the body. They call it Xiao Zhou Tian, "the small celestial revolution," better known in the West as the microcosmic orbit.
Wei Po-yang codifies it in the Cantong qi around 142 CE. Lao Tzu alludes to it. Internal alchemists make it the matrix of all serious spiritual work. In the 20th century, Mantak Chia — a Thai-Chinese Taoist — translated the method for the West in Taoist Secrets of Love (1984) and then Healing Light of the Tao (1989).
The central idea: if sexual energy stays in the lower body, it eventually leaks or stagnates. If it circulates in a complete loop — sacrum up to the crown, then descends along the front — it is refined. The coarse becomes subtle. Desire becomes light. Taoist alchemy summarizes the transformation in three words: jing → qi → shen — essence, energy, spirit.
2.The Principle — The Loop of Fire and Water
Two central meridians structure the circulation. The Du Mai (governing vessel) ascends along the spine from the perineum to the crown — this is the fire channel. The Ren Mai (conception vessel) descends from the palate through the face, neck, sternum, and belly to the perineum — this is the water channel.
Three energy centers (dan tien) mark this loop: the lower dan tien (two fingers below the navel, the furnace of jing), the middle dan tien (the heart, refinery of qi into shen), and the upper dan tien (between the eyebrows, condensation of shen).
When the tongue touches the palate — a gesture called the "magpie bridge" — both meridians close into a circuit. Energy can circulate without leakage. Andrew Newberg, neurologist at the University of Pennsylvania, documented in brain imaging of advanced contemplative practitioners measurable modifications of frontal and parietal activity after several weeks of regular practice. Something objective is happening.
3.The 9 Stations of the Loop
Visualize these points in order — this is the path the energy travels.
1. Hui Yin — the perineum. The source. Where jing rests.
2. Chang Qiang — the coccyx. The first gate, often the most difficult to open.
3. Ming Men — the "gate of life," between L2 and L3. Vitality center, linked to the kidneys.
4. Ji Zhong — the mid-back, between the shoulder blades. Bridge of the diaphragm.
5. Da Zhui — the 7th cervical vertebra, base of the neck. A major crossroads.
6. Yu Zhen — the "jade pillow," skull-neck junction. A delicate opening.
7. Bai Hui — the crown, top of the skull. Apex of the revolution.
8. Yin Tang — the third eye, between the eyebrows. Beginning of the descent.
9. Tan Zhong — the center of the heart. Return to the sacrum along the belly. The loop closes.
4.The Ritual — The Daily Wheel (12 minutes)
Posture: sitting with a straight back (or lying down if necessary), tongue against the palate (just behind the upper teeth), hands crossed over the lower abdomen. Ideally at dawn — the hour of the kidneys in Chinese medicine, 5–7am.
Phase 1 — Warming the dan tien (2 min). Slow abdominal breathing, attention on the lower belly. Imagine a golden ember igniting. Force nothing — let the warmth arrive.
Phase 2 — The ascent (Du Mai). Inhale for 6 seconds: visualize golden light rising from Hui Yin to the coccyx, then the lumbar spine, then the upper back, then the neck, then the skull, then Bai Hui. Roughly one station per second.
Phase 3 — Pause (2 seconds). Light concentrated at the crown, slight pressure upward.
Phase 4 — The descent (Ren Mai). Exhale for 6 seconds: the light descends from the third eye through the face, throat, heart, belly, sacrum. It condenses in the lower dan tien.
Phase 5 — Repeat 9 cycles (minimum), 36 cycles (ideal). During the first weeks, be content with approximate visualization — precision will come.
Closing — Hands placed on the lower belly for 1 minute, feel the warmth deposited. You have just recharged your lamp.
5.Closing oracle
Desire is not the enemy.
It is the fuel that has not yet found its road.
Your Ally
Selenite
Stone of liquid light, it aligns the meridians and facilitates circulation between the sacrum and the crown.
