Karezza: The Forgotten Science of Non-Orgasm That Multiplies Your Power
In short
A Chicago physician named it in 1896. Taoists have practiced it for 3,000 years. Here is the method of prolonged desire that transforms impulse into light.
1.The forgotten method of a radical physician
Chicago, 1896. Alice Bunker Stockham, an American gynecologist, publishes a book that scandalizes her era: Karezza, Ethics of Marriage. From the Italian carezza — caress. In it she describes prolonged union without climax — at least one hour, still, present — as an act of mutual regeneration. Thirty years before Reich invented orgone.
She is merely naming what Taoists have practiced for 3,000 years under the name of "dual cultivation" (shuangxiu), what Hindu tantrikas call maithuna, and what certain Sufis designate as the "way of restrained desire." Sun Simiao, a Chinese physician of the 7th century, even gives the ideal ejaculation frequency by age in his Bei Ji Qian Jin Yao Fang: every 4 days at 20, every 8 days at 30, every 16 days at 40, every 21 days at 50. Beyond that: total abstention except for procreation. Diana Richardson, in Slow Sex (2011), brought this practice back into currency for Western couples.
The thesis is simple and unsettling: the ejaculatory climax is not the summit of pleasure. It is its end. And every end is a loss of essence. All non-Western erotic wisdom has circled this single intuition.
2.The Principle — Why climax exhausts and retention multiplies
On the neurological level, the ejaculatory orgasm triggers a sharp drop in dopamine and a prolactin spike lasting 5 to 7 days (the Coolidge effect, documented in mammals since 1955). During this window, motivation, fine libido, and reward sensitivity all fall. This is the famous "post-nut clarity" forums have been describing for a decade: the clarity is not mental — it is desert-like.
An often-cited study (Jiang et al., Archives of Andrology, 2003) on 28 subjects observed a testosterone elevation of approximately 145.7% on the 7th day of abstinence — a peak that then retreats. Limited methodology (n=28, no control group), but the signal exists and overlaps with Voon's work (Cambridge, 2014) on dopaminergic receptor adaptation in the face of compulsive consumption.
Mantak Chia, in Multi-Orgasmic Man (1996), encodes a distinction that changes everything: orgasm and ejaculation are two separable phenomena. The orgasm is a nerve wave — free, multipliable. Ejaculation is a seminal expenditure — costly, to be rationed. Tantra calls this separating the bindu (the drop) from the orgasm. What remains, sublimated, becomes amrita — the nectar of the crown.
3.The 5 Levels of Mastery
Level 1 — Plateau Awareness. Learning to recognize the "point of no return" 30 seconds before it arrives. Most people cross it in a sleepwalk. The tantrist watches it approach the way one watches a wave.
Level 2 — Strategic Pause. At the threshold, stop all movement. Three deep abdominal breaths. The impulse descends by 70%. You resume, more present.
Level 3 — Recycling (Chia's Big Draw). At the critical point: contraction of the pubococcygeal (PC) muscle in 9 rapid pulses, brief inhalation, tongue against the palate, gaze upward. The energy rises along the spine. You feel the current quite literally change direction.
Level 4 — Valley Orgasm. Several successive plateaus without ejaculation, gentle waves lasting 20 to 40 minutes. The entire body becomes an erogenous zone. Osho describes this state in From Sex to Superconsciousness — no longer the peak, but the valley that stretches wide.
Level 5 — Cosmic Orgasm. The energy fills the whole body, crosses the crown, deep meditative state, expanded perception. Advanced practice — several months to years.
4.The Ritual — The Practice of the Three Plateaus (30–45 minutes)
Solo or as a couple. The goal is not to "not come" — it is to consciously surf the wave. Guilt ruins the practice. Observe without judgment.
Step 1 — Slow warm-up (10 min). Stimulation at 50% intensity, slow abdominal breathing, attention on subtle sensations rather than discharge.
Step 2 — First threshold (5 min). Rise to 80%. At the internal signal of the point of no return, STOP. Three breaths into the heart. Big Draw: nine rapid PC contractions, inhalation toward the crown. Visualization of light rising along the spine.
Step 3 — Repeat a minimum of three times. With each cycle, the energetic amplitude grows. The body becomes hot; the waves are no longer localized.
Step 4 — Closing. If ejaculation occurs: no guilt — simply observe the state over the following hours. If it does not: 5 minutes of microcosmic orbit breathing to distribute the accumulated energy. Recommended consistency: 3 to 5 times per week for 90 days to observe a structural change in baseline energy.
5.Closing oracle
The climax is a slap.
The plateau is an ocean. And an ocean is not something you drink — it is something you learn to live inside.
