The classical image in Wilhelm: 'Heaven together with fire — fellowship with men. The superior man organizes the clans and makes distinctions between things.' The distinction is crucial in traditional commentary: fellowship in the open is auspicious; fellowship based on private interest or tribal loyalty at the expense of broader principle is not.

In practice, Tóng Rén speaks to all forms of genuine community — intellectual, spiritual, professional, creative.
