Deeper Meaning

Hexagram 29, Kǎn, is the doubling of the trigram Water (☵) upon itself — water above and water below, danger repeated, the abyss encountered twice. This hexagram represents the situation of being fully immersed in difficulty, surrounded by danger, with no obvious escape route. The image of water flowing continuously through ravines without losing its nature — filling each hollow it encounters and then moving forward — is the central teaching. Wilhelm: 'Water flows on and on, and reaches its goal. The superior man walks in lasting virtue and carries on the business of teaching.' The judgment affirms sincerity and sublime success: the way through is not by force or cleverness but by the absolutely reliable quality of one's inner center.

In human experience, Kǎn appears at the most genuinely difficult junctures — periods of real danger, sustained hardship, or repeated obstacles that seem to close off every avenue of progress. The classical counsel is not to become rigid in resistance (water does not resist the shape of the ravine) but also not to abandon one's essential nature in the face of pressure. Whatever the outer situation, the inner sincerity must remain intact. In relationships, this hexagram may speak to a bond being tested by genuine adversity. In professional life, it may describe a sustained period of obstacles in which the only sustainable response is consistent, authentic effort regardless of immediate results.

The meditation within Kǎn is the practice of continuity under pressure: keeping the inner spring flowing, day after day, regardless of the terrain. Water does not stop at the obstacle — it fills the space available and then continues. The deepest counsel of this hexagram is that the way through sustained danger is not strategy but character.
