Hexagram 32, Héng, places Wind (☴) below and Thunder (☳) above — the gentle, persistent penetration of wind at the base, the decisive movement of thunder above, two forces that together create continuous, renewable motion. This is the hexagram of duration, of what persists not through rigidity but through continuous, vital adaptation. The classical image in Wilhelm: 'Thunder and wind — duration. The superior man stands firm and does not change his direction.' The apparent paradox is central to the hexagram's teaching: thunder and wind are dynamic, constantly changing in their expression, yet the pattern of their interaction is enduring. Duration is not the same as permanence; it is the quality of sustained alignment between inner nature and outward action.
