Hexagram 39 — Obstruction (Jiǎn) — places Water above Mountain, the dangerous, flowing abyss of Kan above the firm, still solidity of Gen. The image is of a traveler who encounters an impassable abyss ahead and a steep mountain range behind — movement in any direct direction is blocked. Wilhelm's commentary identifies this as one of the hexagrams where conventional forward motion is contraindicated: the obstacle is real, not imaginary, and the appropriate response is not to force through but to seek a different approach. The judgment counsels seeing the great man and perseverance — pointing toward the value of wise counsel and inner alignment before any action is attempted. The classical tradition reads the water-above-mountain configuration as a situation where danger sits above the halt: the correct response is not frozen paralysis but a deliberate, temporary suspension of forward momentum while resources, allies, and understanding are gathered.
