Full Moon: Rituals, Influence and 2026 Calendar
In short
Full moon 2026: complete calendar, rituals to practice, influence on the body and associated crystals. Everything I have learned about lunar magic in 30 years.
1.What Is the Full Moon?
The full moon is the phase of the lunar cycle during which the Moon is completely illuminated by the Sun as seen from Earth. It occurs when the Moon is opposite the Sun in the sky, at 180 degrees of ecliptic longitude. At that precise moment, the visible side of the Moon is fully lit, offering that luminous white disc that has fascinated, inspired and intrigued human beings for millennia. That particular light, I have watched it from dozens of different places around the world — it never changes. It is the only celestial reference that remains identical everywhere.
The complete lunar cycle lasts approximately 29.5 days — this is the synodic month, the basis of ancient lunar calendars that predate our current solar calendars by far. This cycle comprises four main phases: the new moon (absence of visible light), the first quarter (right half illuminated), the full moon (full illumination) and the last quarter (left half illuminated). Each phase expresses a different energy, and the full moon represents the culminating point, the moment of maximum intensity and fulfillment.
In astrological tradition, each full moon occurs in a particular zodiac sign — always opposite the sign in which the Sun is located. Thus, when the Sun is in Aries, the full moon is in Libra; when the Sun is in Cancer, the full moon is in Capricorn, and so on. This opposition creates a symbolic tension between the qualities of the solar sign and those of the lunar sign, which astrologers use to interpret the collective and personal themes of each full moon.
The popular naming of full moons — Blood Moon, Wolf Moon, Pink Moon, Harvest Moon — derives from Native American and ancient European traditions that associated each full moon of the year with a season, a natural phenomenon or an agricultural activity. These poetic names enrich the symbolic and cultural dimension of contemporary lunar practice.
The 'Supermoon' is a full moon that coincides with the lunar perigee — the point on the Moon's elliptical orbit closest to Earth. The Moon then appears slightly larger and brighter than during an ordinary full moon. Esoteric traditions generally attribute to the Supermoon an amplified energetic intensity — and in my own practice, it is often the moment when synchronicities intensify.
2.Influence on the Body and Emotions
The influence of the full moon on living beings has been observed, debated and studied for millennia. Physicians of Antiquity, medieval sages and farmers from every culture developed observations and practices based on lunar influence. What does contemporary science say, and what does the esoteric tradition say?
On the scientifically documented level, the Moon's influence on the tides is incontestable. The gravitational pull of the Moon (combined with that of the Sun) is the primary driver of oceanic tides. Since the human body is composed of approximately 60–70% water, it is theoretically plausible that the Moon exerts some influence on our bodily fluids. However, scientists point out that the Moon's gravity on a human body is infinitesimally smaller than the gravity exerted by nearby objects (a chair, a building), and that tides are significant only on a large scale.
Studies on sleep and the full moon have produced mixed results. A study published in Current Biology in 2013 suggested that subjects slept an average of 20 minutes less and took longer to fall asleep during the full moon. Later studies have not been able to reproduce these results consistently. The more intense lunar light during the full moon may affect the circadian rhythm, particularly in people sleeping without complete window blackout.
In esoteric tradition and in the subjective experiences reported by many people, the full moon is associated with an amplification of emotions, a particular restlessness (healthcare and security personnel often report more intense nights during full moons), sleep disturbances and a more intense inner energy. Female menstrual cycles, whose average duration coincides with the lunar cycle, are frequently linked to the Moon in Goddess traditions and contemporary feminine practices.
Regardless of scientific debates, using the full moon as a marker of synchronization with natural cycles has real value: it invites a pause, a moment of awareness, an observation of one's inner states. In our hyper-connected world that tends to disconnect humans from natural rhythms, lunar magic as a regular practice carries deep meaning. If only as a psychological ritual.
3.Rituals to Practice During the Full Moon
Full moon rituals are ancestral practices found in cultures around the world, from Wicca to Native American traditions, through Hindu lunar ceremonies and Asian lunar festivals. In contemporary practice, these rituals have been adapted to integrate easily into modern daily life.
Full moon meditation is one of the simplest and most accessible rituals. If the weather permits, go outside to observe the Moon with the naked eye for a few minutes. Feel its light on your skin. Then settle comfortably, ideally in a room bathed in moonlight or outdoors, and meditate on the symbolic theme of the sign in which that evening's full moon is placed. A full moon in Libra will invite meditation on relationships and balance; in Scorpio, on transformations and what must be released; in Capricorn, on ambitions and life structures.
Gratitude and release writing is a powerful full moon ritual. On two separate sheets of paper, note on one side what you are deeply grateful for in your life, and on the other, what you wish to release — a habit, a fear, a toxic relationship, a limiting belief. The gratitude list can be kept. The release list can be symbolically burned in a safe container (ashtray, fire bowl) while visualizing these energies being transformed by fire. This is a practice I adopted long ago — there is something profoundly liberating in that gesture.
Creating Moon Water is a simple and beautiful magical practice. Fill a glass container with water (spring water if possible), optionally place an appropriate crystal inside (amethyst, clear quartz, selenite) and leave the container under the light of the full moon overnight. The water thus 'charged' is used in multiple ways: watering plants, washing the face, misting a space, or drinking a small amount as a morning intention.
The full moon circle, a collective practice drawn from modern witchcraft (Wicca and related traditions), consists of gathering in a group to share, honor the Moon and work collectively on common intentions. Even an informal gathering among friends — a contemplative evening by moonlight, with candles, crystals and sincere exchanges — can take the form of a lunar circle.
Finally, the full moon is the optimal moment for recharging crystals and purifying your living space. Place your stones in moonlight, burn sage or palo santo to purify your interior, and perform an energetic cleansing of your spaces while visualizing moonlight passing through the walls and dissolving all stagnant energies. This is not superstition — it is energetic hygiene.

5.Crystals Associated with the Full Moon
Each full moon carries its own energy linked to the zodiac sign in which it occurs, and certain crystals resonate particularly with those energies. Using the right crystals during each full moon can amplify ritual intention and symbolic connection.
Selenite is the quintessential lunar crystal. Its very name comes from Selene, the Greek goddess of the Moon. Pearlescent white and translucent, it is associated with clarity, purity and connection with subtle planes. Selenite does not need to be cleansed (it is self-cleansing according to crystal healing) and is ideal for creating a sacred space during any full moon ritual, regardless of the sign. It is one of my first recommendations.
Moonstone is the other foundational crystal of lunar practices. This labradorite with bluish or pearlescent shimmer is intimately linked to lunar cycles, emotions and the sacred feminine. It is particularly recommended during full moons in Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) and for practices related to intuition, fertility and feminine cycles.
Clear quartz, the quintessential colorless quartz, is the universal amplifier. During the full moon, it captures and multiplies lunar energies. It is ideal for creating Moon Water because it does not degrade in water and amplifies the properties of the infused water. It can be used during any full moon to amplify ritual intention.
Amethyst is particularly appropriate during full moons in Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) and during the full moon in Aquarius. Its connection to the third eye chakra makes it a precious ally for full moon meditations aimed at spiritual development and elevation of consciousness.
Labradorite, with its iridescent sheen, is the stone of lunar magic and transformation. It is particularly recommended during full moons in Scorpio, Pisces and during the full moon in Gemini. It protects the aura and facilitates access to altered states of consciousness during rituals.
Rose quartz is ideal during full moons in Libra and Taurus, both quintessentially Venusian signs. It opens the heart, promotes gentleness toward oneself and others, and supports rituals related to love and relationships. For a full moon evening dedicated to healing the heart and opening to love, rose quartz is the crystal ally par excellence.
Whatever the full moon and whichever crystal is chosen, what matters most is presence and intention. A simple ritual performed with full awareness and a clear intention will always be more powerful than an elaborate protocol carried out mechanically. The Moon, in its generosity, responds above all to the sincerity of our connection.
Frequently Asked Questions
At what time should you perform a full moon ritual?
The ritual can be performed within the 24 hours surrounding the exact moment of the full moon, but the ideal is to do it on the evening when the Moon is at its brightest. You can find the exact time of the full moon in your time zone on any astronomy app or lunar calendar. What matters most is presence and intention, not the precise hour.
Can you perform a full moon ritual even if there are clouds and you cannot see the Moon?
Absolutely. The Moon exerts its influence whether you see it or not. Clouds do not block the gravitational force or the symbolic energy of the full moon. Your intention and your inner connection with the lunar cycle are sufficient to practice the full moon ritual even in overcast weather. Lunar magic does not need a clear sky — it needs you.
How long should you expose your crystals to the full moon to recharge them?
A full night is ideal, but even a few hours is sufficient. Put your crystals out at sunset and bring them back in at sunrise the following morning. If you cannot place them outside, set them on a windowsill that receives moonlight. Intention counts just as much as the duration of exposure.
