Michon: The Priest Who Named Graphology
In short
A French priest coined the word graphology in 1871 and systematized it by 1875. English handwriting listicles use his method without his name.
1.The short answer: he named it, and he did not invent it alone
Jean-Hippolyte Michon coined the word graphology, from the Greek grapho, I write, and logos, doctrine, and gave the discipline its first systematic form. He did not start from nothing. The idea that character shows in handwriting reached him in the 1830s through a teacher, and Michon spent the next four decades turning a private conviction into a named field with a society and a method behind it.
2.Who he was
Michon was born on 21 November 1806 in Laroche-pres-Feyt, in the Correze, and died on 8 May 1881 at 74. He studied in Angouleme and at the seminary of Saint-Sulpice in Paris, where he was ordained a priest in 1830. He resigned his priestly position in 1842 but continued preaching, and his interests ranged far beyond handwriting: he worked as an archaeologist and botanist on an 1850 mission to the Middle East, and published on subjects from architecture to numismatics. He was also, improbably for a priest, the author of anti-clerical novels written under a pseudonym between 1862 and 1869, and of a 1860 book, La Renovation de l'Eglise, that was formally denounced and placed on the Index.
3.The teacher who planted the idea
In the 1830s, Michon was introduced to the notion that handwriting reveals character by Abbe Jean-Baptiste Flandrin, a philosophy instructor. Flandrin never systematized the idea into a discipline. Michon spent the following decades doing exactly that, which is the difference between having an intuition and founding a field.
4.Naming the word, founding the society
On 18 November 1871, Michon published the first issue of Le Journal des Autographes, and it is there that the word graphologie appears in print for what is generally credited as the first time. The same year he founded the Societe Graphologique in Paris, the first organization built specifically around handwriting analysis as a field of study rather than a parlor trick.
5.The books, and the co-author who also shows up on this site
Michon's first book on the subject, Les mysteres de l'ecriture, appeared in 1872, co-written with Adolphe Desbarrolles, the chiromancer whose own systematization of palmistry gets its own article on this site. The two men were working the same decade and the same publishing world, each trying to turn a folk-reading practice into something documented. Michon's major solo statement followed in 1875, Systeme de graphologie, and a shorter Methode pratique de graphologie in 1878. The 1875 book is the one usually cited as the founding text of the discipline: it lays out fixed signs, individual features of a handwriting sample, slant, pressure, size, each assigned a stable meaning on its own.
6.The student who took the fixed signs apart
Michon's method did not survive unchallenged. Jules Crepieux-Jamin (1859-1940), who studied Michon's work closely without being a formal pupil, argued that no sign carries a fixed meaning in isolation, its value shifts depending on everything else present in the writing. He reorganized the field around seven categories, Dimension, Form, Pressure, Speed, Direction, Layout and Continuity, spanning 175 signs, in L'ecriture et le caractere (1888) and L'ABC de la graphologie (1929). Most graphology practiced today, in France and elsewhere, follows something closer to Crepieux-Jamin's holistic reading than to Michon's original fixed signs. English pop culture, when it runs a listicle on what your handwriting reveals, is usually repackaging one or the other without naming either man.
7.What is usable from this
The founder's name is worth keeping separate from the question of whether the practice works. Graphology has never passed controlled validation as a predictor of personality, and that verdict does not depend on which Frenchman gets credited. What Michon actually built was infrastructure: a word, a society, a systematic vocabulary for describing handwriting closely enough that two observers could compare notes. That infrastructure outlived his specific claims, which is usually how a field survives its founder.
Your Ally
Sodalite
Associated with logical structure and clear communication, the stone fits a discipline built on close, patient observation. Use it the way Michon used his journal: to slow down and describe exactly what is on the page in front of you, before deciding what it means.

Who invented the word graphology?+
Jean-Hippolyte Michon, a French priest, coined the term in the first issue of his Journal des Autographes on 18 November 1871, from the Greek grapho (I write) and logos (doctrine).
Did Michon invent handwriting analysis?+
No. The idea that character shows in handwriting was suggested to him in the 1830s by Abbe Jean-Baptiste Flandrin, a philosophy teacher. Michon's contribution was naming the field, founding the Societe Graphologique in Paris in 1871, and systematizing the method in his 1875 book Systeme de graphologie.
Is Michon's graphology method still used?+
Not in its original form. His student Jules Crepieux-Jamin argued that individual handwriting signs do not carry fixed meanings and reorganized the field around holistic categories in 1888 and 1929. Most graphology practiced today follows Crepieux-Jamin's approach more closely than Michon's original fixed signs.
Is graphology scientifically validated?+
No. Handwriting analysis as a predictor of personality has not passed controlled scientific testing, regardless of which system is used. Michon's historical role as founder is a separate question from whether the practice works.
