Portuguese Franciscan (1195–1231), preacher of extraordinary eloquence. A living tradition in Morocco and France.
Life and Devotion
Born in Lisbon in 1195 into a noble Portuguese family, Fernando Martins de Bulhões first entered the Order of Canons Regular of Saint Augustine before joining the Franciscans around 1220, moved by the deaths of the first Franciscan martyrs in Morocco. Renamed Anthony upon his profession among the Friars Minor, he traveled to Italy and was unexpectedly revealed as an exceptional preacher at an ordination ceremony in Forlì. Francis of Assisi himself entrusted him with the theological instruction of the friars — making him the order's first master of theology. He preached tirelessly throughout northern Italy and southern France against the Cathar and Waldensian heresies, with a persuasive power his contemporaries ascribed to the Holy Spirit. Exhausted, he died in Padua on June 13, 1231, barely thirty-five years old. Canonized as early as 1232 by Gregory IX — a record interval of just one year — he was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1946 by Pius XII, with the title of 'Evangelical Doctor'.
Anthony's association with lost objects is rooted in an episode recounted by his Franciscan hagiographers: a novice allegedly stole his personal psalter, a priceless possession in an era when books were exceedingly rare. Anthony prayed, and the novice, seized by remorse or fear, returned the book. Popular tradition amplified this story into a universal patronage over all that goes missing — physical objects, broken relationships, lost directions, missing persons. His legendary eloquence, said by chroniclers to have made fish leap from the water to hear him preach, reinforces the image of a saint capable of restoring what seemed permanently absent. In Morocco as throughout the Mediterranean world, devotion to Saint Anthony remains vivid in chapels and homes, often intertwined with very tangible acts of piety.
In popular practice, Saint Anthony is invoked above all on Tuesdays — the day traditionally dedicated to him. The classic novena spans nine consecutive Tuesdays: light a white candle, a symbol of purity and clarity, then recite the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and a personal prayer naming what you seek to recover. The tradition of 'Saint Anthony's bread' is equally ancient: bread is given to the poor in thanksgiving for a grace received, a gesture that links personal devotion to the communal charity so dear to Francis of Assisi. Naming your request with precision — stating the lost object, person, or situation clearly — is considered essential in popular piety for the intercession to be fully effective.
