Deeper Meaning

Uruz — from Proto-Germanic *ūruz, the auroch, the enormous wild ox of the northern forests — is the second rune of Freyr's aett and one of the most viscerally powerful in the entire Futhark. The Anglo-Saxon rune poem describes it as 'fierce and enormously horned, a very savage beast that fights with its horns': here is primal nature undomesticated, the wild force that cannot be corralled. Thor presides over Uruz not as a god of war but as the guardian of raw strength and earth-energy. In the Norwegian poem the auroch is presented as the courage of every brave man — a force that must be met and engaged, never merely admired from a distance.

In a cast, Uruz does not whisper: it charges. Upright, it signals a surge of vital energy available to the seeker — physical health returning, willpower solidifying, the capacity to push through resistance and manifest concrete results. In love, it speaks of passionate drives and the courage to pursue what the heart desires. In work, it marks the raw material of achievement: discipline, endurance, the willingness to show up even when the threshold is difficult. When Uruz appears in a position of challenge, it questions whether the seeker is resisting necessary effort, avoiding the exertion that transformation demands.

Meditation with Uruz calls for an embodied practice. Plant your feet wide on the earth, feel the weight of your skeleton, and inhale deeply into the belly. Visualize the stave — a vertical line with two descending legs — as a creature lowering its horns before charging forward. The galdr *'Uruz, uruz, uruz'* can be vocalized as a low resonant hum, almost a growl, awakening the base of the spine. Within Freyr's aett, Uruz follows Fehu as raw primal power follows the first spark of abundance: where Fehu is the wealth given, Uruz is the strength to use it wisely. Together they form the material foundation upon which the rest of the aett will build.
