Path of Temperance
In short
What does path 25 of the Tree of Life represent?
Path 25 connects Tiphereth to Yesod through the Hebrew letter Samekh. Alchemical angel, fusion. In the Golden Dawn tradition, it corresponds to the arcanum Temperance.
The path in depth
Path 25 descends directly from Tiphereth, the solar heart-centre and sphere of Beauty, down through the middle column to Yesod, the lunar foundation and sphere of the astral, the dreaming body, and the tidal unconscious — a central, vertical descent along the Middle Pillar that connects the heart of the illuminated self with the sphere of psychic image and instinctual rhythm. This is one of the most alchemical paths on the Tree, because it is the route by which conscious spiritual aspiration (Tiphereth) is poured down into the medium of the unconscious (Yesod), which must receive and hold the higher light in a form that can eventually be grounded into Malkuth. In Hermetic Qabalah, Path 25 is attributed to the Hebrew letter Samekh (ס), whose literal meaning is prop or support — the wooden or stone support that holds an arch in place while the keystone is set, and continues to sustain the structure once the arch bears weight. It is the invisible, faithful carrier, the tireless upholding principle that makes all further building possible.
The tarot arcanum assigned to Path 25 in the Golden Dawn tradition is Temperance — the fourteenth trump (called Art in the Thoth deck). An angelic figure stands with one foot on land and one in water, pouring liquid between two cups in a continuous, steady stream — from one to the other, back and forth — in a process that is neither simply mixing nor simply transferring, but a kind of constant, dynamic blending. The wings of the angel and the solar emblem on its breast connect this figure to Tiphereth; the foot in the water connects it to Yesod's lunar depths. The operation being performed is alchemical in the precise sense: it is the tempering of the spiritual fire with the lunar waters, the gradual conditioning of the unconscious to hold what the awakened heart pours into it. Sagittarius, the zodiacal sign of this path, is the archer who aims upward — but aims from a grounded, standing position.
Working Path 25 inwardly invites you to explore the relationship between your aspirations and the deeper psychic medium through which they must pass before they can manifest. It is not enough to have an illuminated intention; that intention must be poured into the vessel of the unconscious repeatedly, steadily, without haste, until the deeper layers of your being are truly reconstituted by it. This path may invite a meditative practice of gentle repetition — returning to a truth, an aspiration, or a quality of awareness again and again with the patience of the tempering angel, allowing what is above to slowly permeate what is below. The prop of Samekh holds the arch; it does not rush the process of the keystone setting. The art being practised here is the art of patient transformation.
