Hexagram 60 — Limitation (Jié) — positions Water above Lake, the flowing depth of Kan above the joyous, reflective surface of Dui. The classical image is of a lake that is bounded and contained: without its banks and shores, the lake would disperse, becoming neither deep nor navigable. The limitation — the form, the boundary, the defined edge — is what gives the water its power and its utility. Wilhelm's classical reading distinguishes carefully between fruitful limitation and bitter limitation: the judgment holds that bitter limitation — limits imposed so severely that they suffocate rather than contain — must not be made permanent.
