Hexagram 43 — Breakthrough (Guài) — places Lake above Heaven, the joyous, expressive force of Dui above the vast creative power of Qian. Five strong yang lines press upward against a single remaining yin line at the apex — the moment of decision has arrived. Wilhelm's classical commentary identifies this as the hexagram of resolute exposure and final resolution: evil, represented by that single yin line, must be named, announced in the open, in the court of the prince, before it can be definitively removed. The judgment is explicit — announce in complete truth — because the temptation at this threshold is to use force against force, to meet opposition with aggression. The I Ching counsels a different path: public, clear, non-violent confrontation. What has been tolerated or avoided must now be named and resolved. The line dynamics trace the movement of resolution through caution to decisiveness, warning against both timidity and recklessness.
