Hexagram 49 — Revolution (Gé) — places Lake above Fire, the joyous, reflective surface of Dui above the clinging, upward-leaping flame of Li. Fire and water are the two great natural forces most directly opposed: each, in the presence of the other, either overcomes or is overcome. Revolution emerges from this opposition — the moment when one principle displaces another at the foundation of a system. Wilhelm's classical reading situates this hexagram at the level of historical transformations: the changing of dynasties, the overthrow of corrupt orders, the molting of a snake that allows a living being to grow.
