Deeper Meaning

Hexagram 24, Fù, places Thunder (☳) below and Earth (☷) above — the first stirring of yang energy from deep within the earth, a single unbroken line at the base of five yin lines, just beginning to move upward. This is the winter solstice hexagram: the moment when the light is at its weakest and yet the turning has already occurred. The great return has begun, imperceptible at first, subterranean, but real and irreversible. Wilhelm's image: 'Thunder within the earth — return. The ancient kings closed the passes at the time of the solstice. Merchants and strangers did not travel, and the ruler did not go on tour of inspection.' The counsel is to rest, to allow the new movement to gain strength before demanding it perform.

In human experience, Fù is among the most hopeful of hexagrams — but its hope is grounded in natural law rather than wishful thinking. After a period of depletion, collapse, withdrawal, or inner darkness, something genuine has begun to return. In relationships, it may mark the first authentic warming after a period of distance or disconnection. In inner life, it signals the re-emergence of motivation, vitality, or spiritual aliveness that had gone underground. The crucial counsel: do not rush the return. The yang line is new and tender; demanding too much of it too soon will arrest the cycle.

The meditative teaching of Fù is the practice of recognizing genuine beginnings: not the desire for renewal, but its actual first movement. What within you has turned, quietly and without announcement, toward the light? Where do you feel, beneath the surface of your ordinary concerns, the first stirring of something that had been absent? The hexagram invites celebration of this return — not triumphant declaration, but quiet acknowledgment and the protective restraint that allows new growth to take root. The movement carries toward Wú Wàng (hexagram 25), where this returned vitality, freed from calculation, expresses itself as pure, innocent action.
